A rescued golden retriever’s dramatic response to his owner leaving the house has melted hearts, leaving many joking that his emotional performance is straight out of a TV advert.
Whenever Gabrielle Altoft, 32, has to leave the house without her 1-year-old golden retriever, she knows he won’t exactly take it well. The rescue pup, named Charlie, is usually so happy and excitable, but as soon as he recognizes that Altoft is heading out, everything changes.
Indeed, Altoft, from Norfolk, in the U.K, told Newsweek that Charlie instantly makes her “feel guilty” by giving her the saddest look he can pull off. The golden doesn’t waste time before moving to the window and staring at his owner whenever she walks out of the house, making it clear just how sorrowful he is.
“He knows when we pick up the keys that we’re going out, and he takes himself to the sofa by the window and sits and waits to look sad as we walk past the window,” Altoft said.
“He makes me laugh because he’s never alone for more than two hours without family coming to let him out or my sister visiting with his friend Bruce, who is also a golden retriever.”
Nonetheless, Charlie takes it very personally whenever his owners leave him, regardless of how long it is for.
Altoft couldn’t resist capturing a video of Charlie’s antics and posting them on TikTok (@livingthelukelife). The clip shows the emotional turmoil she faces every time she walks out the door without her rescue pup. Charlie can be seen staring out the window, looking forlorn about being left alone.
Charlie’s theatrics certainly amuse his owner, who joked on TikTok that he is “auditioning for the RSPCA advert every time” she leaves the house. This has led to almost 10,000 views and over 550 likes on the post so far.
“The reaction has been hilarious. Some people genuinely feel sorry for him, and others are looking forward to seeing him in some animal-rescue adverts as he’s doing a fabulous impression,” Altoft continued.
Following a diagnosis in 2025, Altoft is currently battling leukemia and regularly attends hospital appointments. Aside from medical procedures and checkups, she is at home with Charlie for the majority of the time. The pup has been such a reassuring presence for Altoft throughout this journey, as she told Newsweek that he has been “acting as a therapy dog” throughout the cancer battle.
While Charlie may have had a rough start to life, he now “lives like a king” since his adoption. (Although, his dramatic reaction to being left alone would make anyone think otherwise.)
“I never leave the house without bringing a snack home for him, and he searches the back for the snacks when I get home, too,” Altoft continued.
Social media users can’t get enough of Charlie’s Oscar-worthy performance, as many took to the comments to laud his antics.
One comment reads: “we’ll expect to see him on the Christmas ad.”
Another TikTok user wrote: “It’s the side eye for me, like a child that’s been told no.”
One person quipped that it’s a “Hollywood Oscar winning performance.”
