Commuting in the Philippines during the rainy season? The struggle is real! From waking up wondering if you’ll get soaked in the rain or step into a puddle of murky water, to squeezing yourself in a jeep and accidentally sitting on a wet seat – it’s…an experience. And quite honestly, an umbrella just doesn’t cut it anymore.

Commuting is about survival, planning ahead, and having the right gear to make the commute bearable. And as someone who braves public transport almost every day, bringing extra socks and mentally preparing myself for downpours and traffic standstills has become part of my routine.

And over time, I’ve also found a few rainy-season hacks and finds that have made my commute a lot more tolerable. Plus, it’s actually kind of fun looking for little upgrades that make the daily grind easier.
Here are a few things I’ve found useful that you may find useful too!

Umbrellas that don’t flip with the wind

What’s the point of an umbrella if it keeps turning inside out during strong winds? I keep this foldable, wind-resistant umbrella in my bag. It’s lightweight, it opens quickly, and it doesn’t take up too much space at all.

Silicone shoe covers

Wet socks all day? No thanks. I came across silicone shoe covers while browsing for waterproof gear, and surprisingly, they work! Now I don’t worry about walking through puddles of water because these get the job done.

Waterproof backpacks to save your essentials

These backpacks aren’t just about aesthetics; they offer peace of mind. I’ve once had to run through the rain and get all of the stuff in my bag wet. I’ve switched to a water-resistant backpack since then. You can also get a waterproof cover!

Raincoats and waterproof jackets

Angkas girlies! Raincoats and waterproof jackets are our best friends. It’s been super useful for surprise downpours, especially when both hands are full or the wind’s too strong. Plus, there are lots of thin, breathable, and easy-to-fold options now too.
